“Born of Fire -The Crack Awakens the Light”
As Leonard Cohen sang in his song Anthem: “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.”
Born of fire, million of years ago molten lava burned and flooded the land, then cooled forming giant columns of basalt with natural inclusions in the stone. When I carved this basalt sculpture, an inclusion released its stress and the stone split in two. This is how I felt after the Thomas Fire. It brought a severe split in the flow of life and transformed what was into the new.
This basalt sculpture is for an exhibition at the Ojai Valley Museum titled Scorched Souls, a tribute and expression of living through the Thomas Fire, the largest fire ever recorded in CA history. The exhibition will include this sculpture and the works by Ojai Studio Artists and the opening reception is March 10 from 5-7pm. Hope to see you there.
