Devin Oatway was born in Santa Barbara, CA, in 1978. He began painting at the age of 17 when he saw a movie that Julien Schnabel made about Jean-Michel Basquiat. He attended Stanford University where he earned a degree in English Literature. In 2003, after graduating, Devin was diagnosed with Schizo-Affective disorder. This is about the time he began painting in earnest, drawing inspiration from the voices and visions. He has since shown in galleries in Detroit, Austin, Berkeley, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Oakland and Ojai, and his work is held in numerous private collections. At one point, Anthony Keidis, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, told him people were calling him a genius. This was in 2008, and Devin was proud to get such praise from a role model like that.
He has been participating in the Ojai Studio Artists Tour since 2013.
