My art is about telling a story. I travel and paint what I see–usually people doing what they do. I made only one trip during the pandemic and that was to Morocco. I wanted to see a part of the Sahara I had never seen–the Southern Provinces–also called Polisario or Western Sahara. This is an area that has been disputed for decades so when I heard it had opened up I jumped on the opportunity last November. While I was there, all the borders closed and I was lucky to get back home. My guide Alal was the perfect subject in his turban and flowing robes. I am never happier than when I am on the crest of a dune at sunset.
