I am an Ojai artist who makes watercolor, ink and acrylic botanical paintings that include birds and insects. My substrate is cradled clayboard called “Aquabord”.
My work begins with my own observations, then I begin a detailed pencil drawing that sometimes takes a couple of days to complete. I design each painting but usually add elements as the piece progresses. While plants and small creatures are the focus of my work, recently I have enjoyed including such things as marbles, a drink parasol or puzzle piece.
I add a smooth acrylic background color that serves as a rest for the eye. My paintings are varnished then framed in a natural color maple frame for a consistent presentation.
This work expresses my appreciation for the beauty as well as the imperfection of the natural world, a recognition of its cycles and impermanence. A celebration.
