Rebecca Odes

Interdisciplinary

Painting

ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice is interdisciplinary, often combining traditional media with new technologies. After studying painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I went to receive a masters at Tisch School of the Arts, where I focused on the intersection of creative work and new media.

The figure has always been an inspiration, and Ojai has turned my eye to nature on a larger scale. My ambient light boxes are created with plexiglass and hand painted silk gauze, using the inherently luminescent qualities of these materials to evoke the space and light of the California landscape. Each piece is unique and individually crafted by the artist.

Larger and site specific works are available by commission.

Electric Ladyland at Every Woman Biennial

It’s a long way from Ojai, but my piece “Electric Ladyland” is up now at the Everywoman Biennial in New York City! It’s an incredible salon style show at the Pen and Brush Gallery, 29 East 22nd Street, open every day until April 11th. There is so much inspiring work filling the gallery, and a bunch of performances scheduled during the run of the show. In my light sculpture, “Electric Ladyland”, organic shapes and materials are interwoven with plastics and electronics, creating an abstracted fantasy of femin-ish utopia. This piece is part of an ongoing series exploring the intersection of nature and technology through layers and light.
