Bernadette DiPietro: Bits and Bobs

Updated: May 1

I have collected an assortment of things since I was a kid. Precious stones were my first collection at age five.

They were considered treasures as I broke them from old jewelry given to me by my mother and aunts. I put them into a variety of tiny jars and kept them in the top drawer of my dresser. THAT WAS THE BEGINNING.

Now I have drawers, jars, baskets, boxes, portfolios and plastic bins filled with an array of interesting objects ready to compose into a two or three-dimensional piece of art. It's remarkable since the origin of the word ASSEMBLAGE ( in its artistic sense ) can be traced back to the early 1950's when I was age five collecting those precious stones.

In the 1970's I was inspired by an exhibition of Joseph Cornell's work of intricate boxes filled with ornate objects. At that point it became clear to me my insatiable need to collect. However, it was not until the early 1990's that I actually initiated the artistic process of putting these valued collections together.

I look forward to meeting you in my studio on May 11, 2024 during the Second Saturday where you can see the bits and bobs that I have gathered and combined into some fun pieces of art.
