I have been working with clay for over 40 years. Nature feeds me energetically and spiritually, so using materials sourced directly from the earth to create organic forms is gratifying. I often slightly alter a piece from a perfect vessel to convey the rough edge of a mountain range or the gentle undulations of flora or water. I use different clay bodies and glaze techniques for my pieces depending on what I am trying to convey. My glazes are mixed from raw materials, and a few are my own recipes that I have developed to mimic natural phenomena. Though I am experienced with a variety of firing techniques, I currently fire most of my work in a cone 10 reduction firing. The process is very active as the body of work directly interacts with the open flame of the kiln environment, incorporating the element of fire into my work.
