Shino glaze is a rustic glaze that was developed in Japan in the 16th century. It is a simple glaze with few ingredients but can create a wide range of effects depending on the application and firing procedure. It is one of my favorites because its primitive nature captures the spirit of the clay.
I revisit Shinos when I feel overwhelmed struggling with new glaze combinations. This vase has two different types applied by pouring the glaze over the pot then sprinkled with wood ash. It is currently on display at the Beatrice Wood Center for the arts as part of our "Artful Adventures" exhibit. I hope you have a chance to check it out.
