This quarantine has necessitated a transformation of my process. Live model-spontaneous-flowing -ction was my method and muse, but the pandemic necessitated a retreat to quiet solitude and thus to more 'inner work'. Rather literally, as doing live portraits became doing self portraiture. Quiet, slower and more introspective than the vivid unbridled unplanned stream of consciousness to which I was accustomed.
I recently received some fabulous art books in the mail- "Hilma af Klint, Paintings for the Future" and "World Receivers" on the work of H. Klint, Georgiana Houghton and Emma Kunz. Hilma af Klint was doing abstraction before there was such a genre, she predated Kandinski, who is historically credited with pioneering Abstraction. I was thrilled to learn that she <one of my favorite gems of an elusive visionary artist> was actually friends with Annie Besant! An Ojai synchronicity!! Hilma af Klint really was a futuristic and brilliantly receptive visionary, so much so that she realized the world wasn't ready for her work and directed in her will as to not release her paintings until twenty years after her death!
Here's to the perseverance of spirit... I hope you are well and connected to these eternal soothing lines of love and vision!
