What attracts one to a representational painting? The composition, values, play of light and shadows, brushwork , and color are all extremely important ingredients in making a great painting but what about the subject matter. or the story behind the painting.? Creating interest, mood or a feeling which attracts or repulses, creating energy or melancholy ?
The story of the painting and its mystique, bringing you back to a time gone by also can play an important role.
The artists themselves can have a story that plays into the allure, and the trials and tribulations, to their emotional struggles to their victories and recognitions.
But if the subject matter is of no interest to the artist or the viewer and does not spark an emotional cord, then the painting usually falls flat and struggles to be interesting.
When I am seeking the subject for my next painting, my emotions will dictate, but I am always drawn to what I love the most in the moment . From the memories of the past to the majestic beauty nature has to offer or the sumptuous curves and shadows of the human form. I paint what I love.

And we love what you paint!
