Mary Neville: Sheltered in Place

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

To shelter is to stay still, to stay safe and calm. It is both a state of being and a choice- a way of grounding oneself in uncertain times.

My latest series reflects my desire to find equilibrium which feels hard to access in this global topsy turvy moment.  While part of the canvas contains the vibrancy of life, the majority is left white. Not solid white but a cloudy day kind of white where things are just visible underneath the surface. It creates a calming shroud. Evoking a distance and softness that is both a shield and a balm. A gentle resistance to chaos. These pieces are sanctuaries, breathing spaces.

The world feels overwhelming, and I’m drawn to the peacefulness of white. I often think about changing my palette, but it’s not really up to me—it depends on the world. When the world feels calm and manageable, when white is no longer needed to balance the chaos, then I’ll reach for the loveliest shades of color. But until then, I’ll stay with white.
