Fred Whitman

Hand-carved Stone Sculpture

Sculpture

ARTIST STATEMENT

As a freshman dental student I learned I was good at carving teeth. I took a day to visit the Chicago Institute of Art, where my mother, Nancy Whitman, studied and saw a figure of a young boy carved in marble. It was then that I knew I would carve figures in stone someday.

Mother Nature is my muse. The miracles of life amaze me everyday. From the simple flower, to the conplexity and symmetry of the human face, she did it all.
