ARTIST STATEMENT
Born in a small town near the Belgian border in Northern France, Virginie Snyder discovered her love for art at a young age through the guidance of her uncle, a talented Flemish painter skilled in traditional pigment-making. With his patient instruction, Virginie began her artistic journey by learning to recreate classical masterpieces using simple materials like pencil, pastel, paint, and charcoal.
Drawn to the world of art, Virginie decided to further her studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries Textiles (ENSAIT). This educational experience provided her with a solid foundation in decorative painting, which eventually led her to opportunities to work in various countries across Europe, Asia, North and South America.
In 1975, Virginie moved to California, captivated by its natural beauty and unique light. Over the years, she developed a genuine appreciation for the local flora and fauna, as well as cultivating her own fruits and vegetables. This connection to nature has inspired her both as an artist and a gardener, allowing her to find joy and inspiration in the simple wonders of the world around her.
Today, Virginie Snyder lives in California, continuing to pursue her passion for art and gardening.
Virginie is thrilled to be a member of the Ojai Studio Artists and also a valued member of the Topanga art community in Los Angeles County. She enjoys exploring the coast from canyon to canyon, but her true sanctuary is her studio in the Matilija Wilderness—a sacred space for contemplation and creation. She takes pride in creating spaces that reflect her love for light, color, and nature, always grateful for the opportunities she has had to learn and grow throughout her life.
