Pam Grau: Reflections

I’ve been on a creative journey for more than five decades, and each stage has felt like a new chapter in a long, unfolding story. Early on, an art instructor told me I should “pick a horse and stay on it”—his way of saying I should commit to one style. But that has never been who I am. My greatest teacher has always been curiosity. I can’t help but wander toward new materials, new ideas, and new ways of seeing. For me, the joy is in the exploration itself—immersing fully in the present moment and letting the work show me where it wants to go.

That same curiosity carried me recently on a road trip through Alaska, where I found myself surrounded by sweeping vistas, glaciers, wildlife, and the quiet wisdom of ancient landscapes. Being immersed in such raw beauty reminded me once again why I make art: to process, honor, and share the wonder of what I encounter. This new body of work is my way of holding onto those moments in nature—and offering them as a gift to others.
