ARTIST STATEMENT

I was bitten by the jewelry bug in high school, followed my dream in college, and love it as much today as I did then.

Constantly in awe, I am grateful for an engaging and satisfying career filled with memorable experiences: teaching early on, designing custom work, selling my jewelry at national craft shows, and owning a well-loved Ojai gallery, HumanArts, with my husband and partner, Stan Katz.

After celebrating 45 years in the gallery, in 2020 we retired, renovated my workshop, outfitted 4 benches for students, and created a dream studio where I can teach jewelry classes and continue to design new work… no plans to slow down!

"Eye Can See Clearly Now"

This is my entry in the OSA Exhibit "As We See It". As I began drawing eyes on paper - I knew it was becoming a Milagro, a lucky charm in Latin American culture that offers prayers for better health, in this case for the eyes. The gems I used here are known for attributes to reduce eye strain, repel negative energy, enhance focus, clarity of purpose, and promote creativity: Coral, Turquoise, Tiger Eye, Amethyst, Lapis, Opal, Emerald, and Quartz Crystal. And so the name came to me: "EYE Can See Clearly Now". It took me over a month to make this necklace out of Sterling Silver, Copper and 18K Gold embellishments. Sawing, filing, planning placement of stones, lots of soldering and setting the gems... it is an intense process of building as you go, piece by piece, to create the whole. The handmade chain adds plenty of eyes to support the request for healing, in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way. I had a great time making it!

The Keeper of all Things Possible

While finishing new work at a frenzied pace this week for Second Saturday May 9th, I marvel that I'm still driven to create after over 50 years of practice. It's my greatest joy to make a unique piece and have someone come along who 'gets it'. It's also my great reward to be teaching silversmithing to students these past 4 years. They join me in my studio for weekend workshops and many return to learn new techniques. The necessary skills are paramount, but always with emphasis on designing wearable art! Come see behind the scenes Saturday May 9th. I'll have my studio open from 10-5, with work displayed and an array of examples that can be completed in my classes. I'd love to meet you and tell you the story behind this necklace: the Keeper of All Things Possible!
