King Salmon Beach - Eureka - CA - Plein Air

Painting

10x8

This piece was painted on site along King Salmon Beach, where the land holds the ocean just out of view. From where I stood, the sea lay behind the low ridge — present in the air, the light, and the cool tones carried across the sand.

I was drawn to the contrast between the pale, wind-smoothed foreground and the dense green mass rising sharply against the sky. Subtle passages of blue and cream move through the sand, echoing the ocean beyond the hill. The darker foliage anchors the composition, while the warm, sun-worn ridge holds back the horizon.

Painted with a palette knife, the surface is built in thick, deliberate strokes — pressed and layered in response to shifting coastal light and wind. The marks remain direct and physical, recording the experience of standing there — aware of the sea just beyond sight.
