Observation 1: The Sierras is the first painting in this new series. It builds on what I discovered through drawing—the shapes, lines and relationships between light and dark—and develops those discoveries into a larger, more abstract painting.

This begins a new direction in my work: drawing helps me understand a place, and painting gives me room to explore what I’ve seen and remembered.
