ARTIST STATEMENT

Growing up in Ojai was a catalyst for me to become an artist. Spending time out of doors near the mountains, free to explore, trained me to love the slow act of observing nature.

My paintings contain plants and flowers, birds and insects and are meticulously designed, drawn and painted in lush and engaging vivid color.

It always starts with an experience where I am inspired by what I see, then I go to the studio and combine elements until I am ready to paint!

Watercolor and ink are the primary mediums and I work on a board that is covered with a thin layer of white kaolin clay that is slightly textured.

Working in a detailed and meticulous way is what I love to do. Each painting is made with intention and contains little surprises for You to see and find for yourself!

Taking time to See

It's a busy life, but I feel rejuvenated when I've slowed down and taken time to see and just Be with nature. It calms my mind and allows me to focus on where that little black squirrel is going, the slowly meandering snail, the little wren in the tree right next to me, or the unexpected gift of seeing forget-me-nots, high on a trail near the sea.

Beauty among Chaos

Being creative during times of extreme busyness outside the studio takes grit and determination. While starting out in a fresh new year of art-making, necessary responsibilities kept pulling me away from the studio. I started a very detailed painting containing one beautiful iris and added a zillion tiny flowers. Then I started slipping one insect after another underneath the flowers. Stepping back, I thought "ah ha, beauty among chaos". This is "Iris•Magnolia•Chaos•Love", 13x13 inches, watercolor, ink and acrylic

The Traveler and The Messenger

For inspiration leading to one of my first paintings made this year, I visited a big nursery. It was a wonderful place, packed with plants and warmth. That place belongs to a man who has great plant knowledge; how they grow, when they bloom and what their proper names are but also a great love of those plants in his care. I was so drawn in by that environment and so inspired. I have great love of the paintings I create. The shapes and colors and the birds and insects; the design. So here is "The Traveler and the Messenger", a brand-new painting for this year.
