ARTIST STATEMENT
Leslie Plimpton is an award-winning artist who favors figurative and portrait work that follows the constant theme of fashion. Her art explores the use of fashion as social identity. Fashion shows our evolving values that occur over the years as well as over the centuries. It states who we are in place and time. It reflects our changing moods, careers, personality, events being attended, changing weather, social status and hobbies. There is a different outfit for everything we do and feel.
Plimpton’s current series of work is centered on portraits of the fashion designer’s themselves as the designers have become celebrities in their own right. She has also focused on a series of women wearing sunglasses, a fashion staple in the industry. Her work is expressed in dry point etching as well as monotype.
Leslie graduated from California State University, Channel Islands receiving a B.A. in Fine Art in 2007. She supplemented her education with printmaking classes with master printmaker, Xavier Fumat at GEMINI G.E.L. in Los Angeles and master printmaker, Michael McCabe of Santa Fe.
She has exhibited constantly since 2001, with highlights including the 11th Biennial International Printmaking Exhibition in Douro, Portugal, and Los Angeles Fashion Week. She is a juried member of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, the Santa Barbara Printmakers, the inkspots of San Buenaventura, the Santa Barbara Art Association and the Ojai Studio Artists.
Her artwork has been collected by people from around the United States.
